The soundtrack album for the 1979 film Quadrophenia is also called Quadrophenia, just like the 1973 double-album by the Who upon which the movie was based.

The soundtrack was first released by Polydor Records in 1979, on both cassette and LP. Since then, it has also been released on CD in 1993 and 2001.

The 1979 Quadrophenia soundtrack album

Of the 17 tracks found on the original 1973 double-album Quadrophenia, 10 are included on the soundtrack. The soundtrack also have three other tracks: “Four Faces”, “Get Out and Stay Out” and “Joker James”.

The ten tracks from the 1973 double-album were remixed by John Entwistle for the soundtrack album, and most of them were also made slightly shorter. One example where the difference between 1973 and 1979 is very clear is the track “The Real Me”, which come with a different bass track, more prominent vocals and a more definite ending on the soundtrack. The definite ending was a part of the original recording, but had been faded out for the 1973 double-album. In the movie, “The Real Me” was used for the title sequence of the film.

“Get Out and Stay Out” and “Joker James” is Kenney Jones first on-record appearance as a drummer in the Who after the death of the original drummer Keith Moon in 1978.

“Four Faces” was recorded during the original 1973 sessions, but not used for the 1973 double album.
