The Concert File Notes: This was the biggest show of the tour with 26,000 fans, and the band were on good form. The venue did not initially inspire the band much, and 10,000 fans rioted on the morning of the show, breaking into the arena while the roadies were erecting the gear. After three songs, a cloud of blue smoke drifted from behind the stage, and the band stopped playing while an electrical fault was rectified. As Roger introduced the "selection from our latest album Quadrophenia", Pete played a funky version of the four-chord sequence of the chorus of 'The Real Me'. This was very effective and unusual for The Who, after which Pete went into the louder, full-blown riff that started the song proper. In fact, Townshend was in very lyrical mood on guitar, playing melodic phrases and riffs between numbers. Roger Daltrey described 'Summertime Blues' as "one of the first records we ever copied from another artist", while Pete dedicated 'My Generation' to "every one of you that feels you can identify with our age group". The band returned for an encore which started with 'Substitute'. Following 'Naked Eye' came a fast improvisation to which Daltrey added some vocals before moving into 'Let's See Action' and the second performance of 'My Generation'. Steve Lake witnessed the show for Melody Maker (February 16): "'Drowned' from Quadrophenia was the absolute killer, reaching crescendo with Townshend demolishing another £350 guitar, bouncing it twice off the stage, and finally snapping it at the base of the neck with a sledgehammer swipe at his speaker stack. Sparks flew from the jack-plug socket. Moon, looking as crazed as ever, offered out-of-tune vocals on 'Bell Boy', despite the fact that he was wearing headphones. He redeemed himself a little later by revealing a surprisingly delicate touch on the quieter passages of 'Sea And Sand'. Elsewhere he threshed like a combine harvester on amphetamines... [on 'Naked Eye'] Townshend played the best guitar of the night. He stumbled around in circles, eyes closed, alternately resembling a Modigliani portrait and an Irish navvy, scrubbing across the strings, working from scratchy, scrappy rhythms to weaving and ducking lead lines of thunderous power. Double bass drums kicked pneumatically, and it was all over. The Who huddled stage centre, arms entwined, sweating profusely. They grinned their appreciation and staggered off, carrying the triumphant Moon aloft. Paris won't forget for a long time." *Guitar destroyed: Gibson Les Paul Deluxe. Please note that The Who also performed at the Les Arenas in Poitiers, France on the 17th of February as well as the Local Venue in Toulouse, France on the 22nd of Februrary. Because there is little or no information about these shows I decided not to include them in this section. |
