The Concert File Notes: 'My Generation' developed into a loose jam during which Pete sang a version of Them's 'Gloria'. This then moved through 'You Really Got Me', to which John added some vocals, although the band came unstuck at the upward key-change! These performances were both unique to the mature Who set. The medley was finished with 'Big Boss Man', a more familiar Who staple. During the stay in New York, Pete was interviewed by John Rockwell of the New York Times (June 13), to whom he made the famous and amusing comment: "The Who is a bloody wild animal, and it has to be fed chunks of raw meat and Southern Comfort. It can't feed on anything less."

Had the opportunity to party with Keith & John on various nights of their stay in town ..went to the party on friday night which was at the city center where they had a roller derby match for the entertainment of the attendees... Keith was hanging pretty heavy with Mitch Mitchell on a couple of nights ...most of the weeks party action took place at and around the bar of the Hotel Navarro on Central Park South...I'll search my weakening brain cells to recount of few of the experiences I had in order to share them with you...
On one of the early nights of the week I had Keith & John in my car (a 1971 Ford Gran Torino) ...there were six of us in the car and we were moving down Park Avenue heading towards Max's Kansas City for a late dinner...Keith was in the middle up front next to me and wanted to play some music in my eight track player....he opened the glove compartment and found all Who eight track cartridges ....he was a bit dissappointed and started flinging them out the open windows at other cars as we bottomed out on the bumps of the Avenue...on the one hand this was hilarious to him...he gave my Quadrophenia 8 track the hardest throw!!! On the other hand I was no more than a senior in high school at the time and was watching some tough money go out the window...but it was still part of the experience..
There are more stories...I don't often get the time or the ambition to share them...they seem to be best preserved as part of a 'misspent youth' in memory...but staying with the Odds & Sods list and recently reading most of 'Dear Boy' has sort of moved me to recount for myself and possibly some of the list members some of these fortunate experiences... |
